Together we raised $45,000 to provide 180 laptops to students in Mexico City!
Christel House builds and operates learning centers in India, Mexico, South Africa, Jamaica, and inner city Indianapolis. These schools break the cycle of poverty by giving kids a hand-up, not a hand out and empower students in impoverished areas to become leaders in their community through education. At Christel House the entire family is uplifted because their child now has access to high quality education including English and technology. With schools in impoverished communities around the globe, Grand Pacific Resorts is most deeply connected to Mexico City.
Laptops Make Distance Learning Possible at Christel House Mexico City
For nearly the past two decades, we’ve been honored to host a major fundraising event, the Annual RCI Christel House Open, in the form of a golf tournament uniting local businesses and Associates of Grand Pacific Resorts in an effort to raise money for Christel House.
However, this year has changed everything, including the ways in which we are able to support the community, and we’ve had to look for new approaches to staying connected to the causes that we’re passion about.
The first time our co-founder David Brown traveled to Christel House in Mexico City, a school for impoverished children, he was shocked at the conditions in which many of them were living, yet took comfort in knowing that Christel House provided them with a clean and safe place to learn.
The second time he visited, this past November, he asked the school principal what Christel House needed most, and it came to light that the school wished to have laptops for the high school students.
With that, David returned home with a specific mission in mind: to raise enough money to buy laptops for every high schooler, knowing that doing so would provide them with the educational resources as well as the computer literacy that is so essential in today’s world.
Donors immediately answered the call and contributed enough to purchase HP Chromebook laptops pre-loaded with educational software for every one of Christel House’s 180 high school students.
Little did anyone realize that the timing of this initiative would prove to be impeccable, and that within just a few short months, distance learning would become the new normal for students everywhere. We were so humbled to be able to provide Christel House students with the necessary equipment for remote education just ahead of a global health crisis.
However, our work isn’t nearly over yet: Our next immediate goal is to cover the cost of WiFi service in all the students’ homes for the next six months. If you are able to help us continue to bridge this educational gap and pave the way for these students to have a brighter future, click below to learn how you can get involved.
Christel House is a non-profit organization that helps transform the lives of children in disadvantaged communities around the world in an effort to break the cycle of poverty. By providing access to educational opportunities, individual families as well as entire communities benefit. From hosting annual fundraisers to providing internship opportunities to donating much-needed laptops, we are always looking for ways to continue helping and staying connected to our friends at Christel House Mexico City.
